Good times bad times
I want to share this list of ‘good and bad things that just happened to us’ with you. I started the list last week and before it becomes too long, I better publish it…
List of bad things that happened recently:
- Snowstorm brought heaps of snow (the most snow since 1876!!) and made us stuck in our house. Santa Fe closed roads and shops.
- Nathan’s car stuck at his work – two days no car – not able to go anywhere, because no public transport, stuck at home still.
- We got a ride by our landlords to get Nathan’s car free, but when we arrived, Nathan forgot his car keys. It was a big laugh because we drove through the snow storm, got stuck in the middle of the ride, freed us out again, drove on, slit here and there and finally we reached the place safely, but then: no keys.
- Nathan’s boss drove with his snowplow into Nathan’s car front and broke the lights, blinker, bumper, and some other things.
- Nathan and Lawrence (one of our landlords) put snow chains on Nathan’s tires but they fell off after a few seconds of driving, because they weren’t the right size.
- I had a bad allergic skin reaction all over my body and we needed to clean our house and wash all our bed sheets. The cheap washing salon was closed, so we paid double the prize at another one, what made about $ 14 for three loads and dryer.
- I got a bladder infection and needed to go to a doctor. The costs were $ 90.
- We could get Nathan’s car free but now he has a leak in the power steering. Nathan did work on his car, lying in the snow under car and froze his ass off. He tried to get a small rusty part off for hours. It was his free day.
- I bake German cookies from a German recipe book that was translated in English. Unfortunately, they did not come out that good. The dough was very weird as well; super dry and not as expected. I have heard that cooking and baking is different here, because of our higher altitude here and the higher air pressure.
- Because of being stuck, we could not buy groceries and so we went out of bread. Therefore, I made my second try and bake bread rolls. Unfortunately, I had problems with the dough again. I did not get bread rolls as result; I got flat cookies; a little bit hard and burned from the bottom. Damn. I give up.
- We could not go to our sushi dinner at the nice sushi restaurant where we booked a table for New Years Eve, because our car is still not usable.
- They guy who bought the fireworks for New Years Eve never arrived at the party at Amy and Joey’s, so we didn’t have any fireworks (not too bad in my eyes).
- My hair gets oily here unbelievably fast; already next day after washing but my skin is super dry. I do not feel well.
- We got a phone line, but we cannot use the phone because it makes noise so that one cannot understand anything the other person is saying.
- We got a dial up connection for $ 8/month, but it is not really working. Sometimes we cannot go online for a whole day or other times it just disconnect us every 5-10 minutes. If we get a connection, it is super slow, slower than I have ever had it when I was first online in 1999. One day I needed 4 hours to check two email accounts (gmail and web.de). With DSL, I normally do it in less than a minute.
- I bought a pair of jeans but at home, I saw that they left the security button (with ink in it) on one leg of the pants. The shop were we bought it was long ways away (about an hour to drive from our home).
- Our mattress is not very comfortable and we both suffer from sore backs every morning. The mattress is a futon and it has a hollow space in the middle where we always roll together.
- No jobs in sight yet, but we have not really been able to look around during the snowstorm without internet and phone and a local newspaper only sometimes, when we are able to get one, because at least three times it was sold out.

Good things that happened yet:
- Nathan’s boss lend him his Mercedes 280c (see photo in gallery) until his car is ready to go again.
- The sun shines every day and it is warm during the day (very cold at night though).
- Our house is cozy and warm. The heater really works great compared to Australian heaters ;o).
- We only eat good and healthy food. A very cool mostly organic food store here is cheap and has all the good stuff we buy.
- Nathan’s friend Joey picked us up for the New Years Eve party at their house and he brought us back home at night. Therefore, we did not have to stay home with our broken car.
- We have very nice and friendly landlords. They brought us a typical Mexican dinner once, called Tamales, with duck and pork.
- I did not spend $ 150 at the doctor as expected, only $ 90.
- Luckily, I got an abroad private health insurance before I left Germany.
- Nathan’s boss pulled Nathan’s car finally out of the snow with his Jeep. Why didn’t he do it before we worked hours hard on getting the car free?
Looks like a lot of bad stuff happened, but now it’s already getting better, so don’t worry, we’re fine.
