Santa Fe Impressions

General:

There are more stop (road) signs than probably anywhere else in the world. I will count them on the way to town in the next few days.

People either take the ’stop’ at a stop-sign very seriously or they just run it over. The first group dominates here.

The drive rules on the road are different here: at an intersection with four roads and four stop signs, the first who stops can continue driving. This can be confusing if 4 cars almost stop at the same time…who is then next to drive, without causing an accident?

Have not seen any roundabout here.

Snowfall on private or public property: Nobody is responsible if you slip on an icy or snowy sidewalk/parking lot/private property. You need to take care of yourself. (In Germany house owners are responsible to keep the sidewalk, if it belongs to their house property, clean and save to use., means: remove snow in winter, remove (slippery) leafs in fall. If someone slips and gets hurt, the house owner has to pay.)

Restaurants close very early, some at 8pm (even on Saturdays), some at around 9.30pm. We only went to three restaurants yet, but one was right in the middle of downtown next to the most popular bar, so why do they close so early…I like to eat late.

It is not allowed to smoke in any public location (I already knew that and you probably, too). For the smokers, one bar (called “cowgirl’s”) has a smoker’s bus that is parked in front of the bar, so that people do not get cold or wet or whatever, during they smoke their cigarette(s).

The roads are in a bad condition (compared to German/European roads). We once drove through a concrete hole that was as wide as a car tire and as deep as my arm’s length. If we drove over it with a scooter or motor-bike, we probably would have broken our necks.

It is more illegal to touch another person’s mailbox than to drive without a driver’s license. You can go right to jail when you touch someone’s mailbox.

Many cars have all windows tinted except the windscreen. Looks like an alien automobile. In Germany it is only allowed to have tinted windows in the back of a car.

In the town “Los Alamos” they build the nuclear bombs of the United States. It is the biggest nuclear building are in the States. Los Alamos is only a few kilometers from us. Nice. Tomorrow there is a party at a friends’ house in Los Alamos. Should I already say goodbye to you?

Personal:

The avocados are great in taste. A good reason to stay here for a while.

I could not find good black olives yet. I miss Spanish black olives. The only black ones that I have found are from California.

Good Chocolate is expensive and hard to find. They have Ritter Sport and Lindt chocolate here. A package of Ritter Sport is $ 1,49 (~1 Euro) and a bar of Lindt costs $ 2 (cheaper than in Germany). I still miss the cheap and good German chocolate and the great variety.

I am still alive, although I have not eaten any Nutella for a long time….

Except for one day, I ate oatmeal ( the McCann’s Quick Cook Irish Flake Oatmeal) every day. I already ate three oatmeal packages (450 grams each) and one maple syrup bottle.

They have the good Australian wine that I love so much, also available here. It is about the same price as in Germany ($7-10 = 5,30-7,70 Euro).

I found good drinking water: “Gerolsteiner” fizzy water :) It is German water and costs 1 Euro per Liter at Trader Joe’s. Not very cheap, but no better fizzy water in sight yet.

Did I really only talk about food in the personal impressions section here? :-) Well, I like food…

I wanted to scan a few of my application pages in a copy shop and they wanted to have $10 per DIN A 4 page (letter size). I thought it will cost only a few cents or a Dollar per scanned page. It was a copy-shop for very professional issues I guess.

Sorry, food again….I love the Jelly Belly beans (sweets) although I am a chocolate person. While writing these words I eat my last three Jelly Beans…
