Today was Good Friday and my dad got some fresh herring from one of his fisher buddies. It is herring season and if we had more time we would go fishing, too. I missed fresh fish and I missed preparing and cooking fresh fish together with my dad. We always fry fish that we caught in our garage or in the garden, to avoid the fish smell in the kitchen and in the house. Today we carried everything in the garden, to our gazebo (or arbor? hon…our Laube): flour, breadcrumbs, salt, pepper, aluminum foil, butter, oil, a frying pan, a mobile hot plate, about 20 herrings, two large bowls for the fried fish and two spatula. It took about an hour to fry the fish. We ate some for lunch and it was awesome! Yummy!
My dad likes to eat the roe (Rogen) as well. It does not look very delicious and I am not ready to try it yet, but he says it is the best part of the fish…here a picture of the raw (a little bit bloody) roe:
After lunch I pickled about ten herrings, which will be ready to eat in four to six days. Anticipation!

Ohhhh – that made me laugh!!!! I would have written the sentence exactly the same way und my husband would certainly have left a similar comment… And I tried to teach him Fischers Fritze as well – pointless! 
We must practice more, hon. Fischers Fritze fischt frische Fische…Natey’s Cola fishes fresh fish…soon.
