Democracy or WP-Polls?
I just want to let you know that I test two poll plugins at the moment: The Democracy AJAX Poll by Andrew Sutherland (which I use since quite a while, but which code unfortunately is not XHTML valid) and WP-Polls by Gamerz (Chan Lester), which I use the first time.
Which one is better? I will find it out…but you must help me and vote!
Nur ein kleiner Hinweis: ich teste momentan zwei Umfrage Plugins: das Democracy AJAX Poll von Andrew Sutherland, welches ich schon eine ganze Weile benutze, aber welches leider keinen validen XHTML code produziert, und WP-Polls von Gamerz (Chan Lester), welches ich das erste Mal im Einsatz habe.
Welches der beiden plugins ist besser? Ich werde es herausfinden, aber Du musst mir helfen und mit abstimmen!
Durch Stephan’s Aufreger der Woche kam ich auf die momentane Nerv-Diskussion des NRG (Nichtrauchergesetzes) in D. Da ist man mal für ein paar Monate im Ausland und denkt sich, das Thema ist vorangekommen, aber Pustekuchen…nun frag ich einfach mal, wie ihr euch entscheiden würdet, wenn ich an der Macht wärt…äh, wenn ihr natürlich an der Macht wärt. Grins.
Challenge: Great Grandma Anna’s crumble cake
My latest baking stories…. I collected a few recipes that I found in magazines, baking books, and online to start my personal challenge to make the best crumble cake (Streuselkuchen). The reason for that is that my grand-grandmother made the best crumble cake I have ever eaten. Unfortunately my family does not have the recipe what is very sad, because everyone misses her perfect crumble cake. My family remembers in every details how great her cake was. Everyone combines Ur-”Oma Anna” (Great-”Grandma Anna”) with crumble cake. Mhhhhh, I still remember the smell of her house, when she made the cake. I live now in this house and it reminds me so often of my Granny and her famous crumble cake.
Last year I made my first crumble cake. The yeast dough was too firm. The taste was fine, but not at all like how I know it from my Granny.
A few days ago I made a new version from a new recipe that I found online and which obviously a lot of people liked. This version was for a spring-form pan:
The dough was much better than the cake from last year, but the taste….was good, but still something was different than her cake. Maybe the crumbles on top need more butter taste…and the dough could be sweeter in general? I don’t know, I will bake the next crumble cake this week. I have two more recipes that sound good and I talked to a baker (my neighbor) today and he gave me tips and told me everything he knows about the secret of a good yeast cake. He also said that yeast cakes are a challenge. Yup, that is something for me; I like challenges.

Hey Yardman, thanks for the ride
May I proudly present my lawn that I mowed yesterday. 
My dad explained me how to ride our yardman, which is our supersize (well, the German understanding of larger) lawnmower. The following picture shows my dad and Nathan on it last summer: [] What a fun to ride it! I has a brake and a gas paddle, gears (drive, reverse, and neutral), a lever hold for the mow tools, and the speed shift. On its back you have a handle that you pull to open and empty the box in which you collect the mowed grass.
If you forget to put the mow tools up before you drive backwards, or you mix up the order of start-brake-shift gears-mow tools down-gas-drive-brake-mow tools up-shift reverse-go-and so on…you will hear a loud bang, which means: misfire – BANG! Not good for the engine…and it happened to me once. The neighbors must have heard my shriek, hihi. Very scary when you sit on the yardman and it goes off with a very loud bang. I thought that the whole wagon will explode.
Our garden is a little bit larger than usual gardens, so we have quite a lot lawn that needs to be mowed (~3000 square metres). My dad and I mowed alternately. I hope the grass grows fast, so that I can do it again, because it is fun. Yeah! What was no fun at all is removing the moss that grows all over our lawn. We used a verticulator to spike into the lawn to give it air and to remove the moss. We worked the whole afternoon, bu we still have 80% of mossy grass area. Sigh.
Shame on me
Oops, I forgot that yesterday was shutdown day. What a shame, because I wrote about it here and I really liked the idea. Must be my Spring fatigue…yaaaawn. Well, on the official page they made a list, where people wrote what they did that day while they didn’t use their computer. If you want to know why something like the shutdown day once every quarter a year would be good for the German birth rate, check their page. Smile.

Und ich hab schon gedacht, oh hoffentlich geht das gut” (O-ton Freundin, die noch nie in der USA war), “Jetzt musst Du Dich aber entscheiden, entweder heiraten oder arbeiten, was willst Du?” (so nach dem Motto, der Zug ist bald abgefahren, ich wäre ja schon fast im Rentenalter) (O-ton Tante, jene, die mich als eine der wenigen regelrecht in die Staaten gestoßen hat, weil sie selbst ein US-Fan ist), und so weiter, bla bla bla. Eure schlauen Kommentare von der bequemen deutschen Couch kann ich nicht mehr hören. Ich bin trotzdem stolz auf das, was ich gemacht habe und was ich mache und noch vor mir habe. Auf Miesmacher, Besserwisser und Trittbrettfahrer habe ich noch nie etwas gegeben. Es ist nur leider sehr enttäuschend, was man sich so von eigentlich nahstehenden Menschen anhören muss. Was auf alle der Zitierten passt: “Wer im Glashaus sitzt, sollte nicht mit Steinen schmeissen, sondern sich mal an die eigene Nase fassen”. Kopfschüttel. Ende.

I cannot listen to these voices anymore: “You could have known it before” (parents), “Well, I always thought that the USA is like “this” or like “that”, I could have said it to you before” (friends, who never went to the USA and who like to babble what other people say), “I often heard that that area there is supposed to be like “this” and “that” and I already thought, hopefully everything will be fine when you are there” (friend who never went to the States and whose information often lacks of quality), “Now you really need to decide, either you marry or you work, what do you want?” (???)(aunt, who was one of the few people who pushed me with my plans to move to the US, because she herself is a big USA fan), and so on…. I am sick of your ‘smart’ comments from the comfortable German couch. Anyway, I am proud of everything I did, and what I do, and what will come next. Scaremonger, wisenheimer (wiseacres? smart alec?) and free-rider never got (get) my ears and my interest. Unfortunately, it is very disappointing what your ears need to listen to, from close-related people. Es geht ums schwarz-auf-weiss in Druckform, das gute alte Buch.
Ein nettes Stöckchen, wie man so ein Frage-Antwort Spielchen in der Blogwelt nennt, hat meine Aufmerksamkeit erhascht. Mein erstes Stöckchen, juchuu, das ich, ohne dass ich es zugeworfen bekomme, selbst gefunden habe (erst bei Anke, die es von zeitlos hat, der er aus dem Englischen von system13 übersetzt hat, usw.). Ich konnte einfach nicht widerstehen und habs mir auch geschnappt.
Es geht los:
Gebunden oder Taschenbuch?
Wenn es der Geldbeutel es zulässt, dann am liebsten gebunden. Gebunde Bücher zu lesen macht mir mehr Spaß, ist komfortabler, die Seiten knicken nicht so, das Papier ist schön dick und der Druck ist besser. Der Aufpreis für Gebundenes ist mir jedoch meist zu hoch. Daher gibts oft auch “nur” das Taschenbuch. Bei besonderen Büchern ist die gebundene Version ein Muss.
Amazon oder Buchhandel?
Infos holen und anlesen bei Amazon und so oft wie möglich versuchen im Buchhandel zu kaufen (um jene zu unterstützen). Wenns ganz schnell gehen muss, dann ist Amazon erste Wahl.
Lesezeichen oder Eselsohr?
Lesezeichen! Ich liebe die flachen magnetischen Clips. Aber Eselsohren? Pfui! Das tut doch in der Seele weh.
Ordnen nach Autor, nach Titel oder ungeordnet?
Äh, ordnen? Im Regal oder wie? Wenn ich denn mal eine längere Zeit an einem Ort bin, wo ich mir ein Bücherregal einrichten kann (und sich der Aufwand lohnt), dann nach Autor oder nach Genre.
Behalten, wegwerfen oder verkaufen?
Verkaufen nur im Falle des absolut-Nichtgefallens. Bücher wegwerfen ist wie Schuhe wegwerfen. Oder sogar noch schlimmer. Geht nicht, dann lieber verschenken oder tauschen. Aber Bücher, die mir gefallen haben, kann ich nicht weggeben.
Schutzumschlag behalten oder wegwerfen?
Ist genauso schlimm wie das ganze Buch wegschmeissen. Der Umschlag gehört doch dazu, wie das Booklet zur CD.
Mit Schutzumschlag lesen oder ohne?
Habe noch nicht viele Bücher mit so nem Umschlag gehabt. Grübel, ich glaube, ich stimme hier für ‘ohne’.
Kurzgeschichten oder Roman?
Lieber Romane, darin kann man besser versinken. Kurzgeschichten sind halt zu kurz; wenn man grad schön drin ist, ist’s schon wieder vorbei.
Sammlung (Kurzgeschichten von einem Autor) oder Anthologie (Kurzgeschichten von verschiedenen Autoren)?
Kann beides gut sein. Habe mit Kurzgeschichten nicht so viel Erfahrung.
Harry Potter oder Lemony Snicket?
Muss ich mich schämen, wenn ich jetzt frage: wer ist Lemony Snicket? Ich hätt ja auch so tun können, als wenn ich wüsste wer es ist, und vorher googlen…aber isch bin ja ehrlich.
Ich bin seit einer Pragfahrt während meines Studiums mit dem Harry Potter Virus infiziert, auch wenn ich es nie gedacht hätte, dass so ein Massenhype mich je beinflussen könnte. Aber meine damalige Mitbewohnerin Nico hat mich überzeugt. Frau Rowling hat mich mit Band 1 wieder zum Lesen gebracht.
Aufhören, wenn man müde ist oder wenn das Kapitel endet?
Wenn ich zu müde bin, dann bringt es nichts zu lesen, denn nur noch meine Augen bewegen sich, mein Hirn nimmt jedoch nichts auf. Also: lieber aufhören.

Ah…ja. Wenn ersteres auf Kriminalgeschichten hindeutet, dann gerne. Märchengeschichten sind erst wieder aktuell, wenns Nachwuchs gibt.
Kaufen oder Leihen?
Kaufen, gebraucht oder neu. Egal. Geliehen habe ich mir Bücher damals als Schülerin. Finde es aber schöner, wenn man seine Lieblingsbücher zuhause ins Regal stellen kann und später noch mal reinschauen kann.
Neu oder gebraucht?
Wenns geht, dann neu aber, wie bereits erwähnt, auch manchmal gebraucht.
Kaufentscheidung: Bestsellerliste, Rezension, Empfehlung oder Stöbern?
Empfehlungen sind immer so ne Sache, da Geschmäcker bekanntlich sehr verschieden sein können. Zum Beispiel war “Sophies Welt” damals überhaupt nichts für mich und Digital Fortress wurde bei Amazon eher mies bewertet und ich fand es toll.
Ich lese oft Rezensionen und schaue auch gelegentlich auf Bestsellerlisten, allerdings nehme ich beides nicht allzu ernst. Es dient eher einer generellen Übersicht. Stöbern bringt Spaß, weil man tolle Bücher entdecken kann. Allerdings kann man dabei schnell mal die Zeit vergessen.
Geschlossenes Ende oder Cliffhanger?
Oh, das kommt ganz auf das Buch an. Es muss halt passen und darf kein Aha-Effekt sein. Geschlossenes Ende finde ich aber schöner.
Morgens, Mittags oder Nachts lesen?
Ich sag mal: abends. Morgens nur, wenn z.B. wenn der Partner noch schläft und man das warme Bett noch nicht verlassen will. Mittags wird höchstens Zeitung gelesen.
Einzelband oder Serie?
Serien sind toll, aber ich brauche zwischendurch Abwechslung und mixe dann.
Lieblingsserie?
Früher als Kind waren es ganz klar die “Geheimnis um…” Bücher. Momentan ist es Harry Potter.
Lieblingsbuch, von dem noch nie jemand gehört hat?
Sag niemals nie…ähm…tja…da fällt mir nix ein, was hier passen könnte.
Lieblingsbuch, das du letztes Jahr gelesen hast?
“Digital Fortress” von Dan Brown oder auch “Streiflichter aus Amerika. Die USA für Anfänger und Fortgeschrittene.” von Bill Bryson.
Absolutes Lieblingsbuch aller Zeiten?
Damals war es “Die letzten Kinder von Schevenborn”, wenn ich es heute auf eins reduzieren müsste, dann wahrscheinlich auf “Frühstück mit Kängurus” von Bill Bryson.
Wer macht weiter?
Ich gebe weiter an maudchen, Maren und den Mann von der Couch, wenn ihr Lust habt.
Wer möchte, kann das Stöckchen natürlich aufheben und weiterführen. Interessieren würd mich ja auch Schwesterherz’s Stöckchen, aber die Kleene hat ja leider kein online-log-journal-Schreibdingens…

Hardback or trade paperback or mass market paperback?
If I can or want afford it I like to buy hardback. Most of my books are paperback though.
Amazon or brick and mortar?
Get information from Amazon and try to buy mostly at brick and mortar stores (to support them).
Barnes & Noble or Borders?
Since I am from Germany, I don’t know them. I have seen Borders in Santa Fe, but I didn’t visit them.
Bookmark or dog-ear?
Bookmark, of course! I love the magnetic bookmarks. Poor book with a dog-ear…
Alphabetize by author or alphabetize by title or random?
If I stay at a country for longer than a few months, I would organize my bookshelf by author or by genre. But my books are in boxes at the moment.
Keep, throw away, or sell?
Mostly keep them, sometimes sell them, never throw any book away. Throw a book away like it is garbage? Horrible.
Keep dustjacket or toss it?
It belongs to the book! I always keep it. It is like the CD booklet…often on the dustjacket you can read about the author or other details.
Read with dustjacket or remove it?
I didn’t have many books with a dustjacket yet. Hmm…still I say I would read without it.
Short story or novel?
Novel. I like to sink into stories. Short stories are too short.
Collection (short stories by same author) or anthology (short stories by different authors)?
I am not experienced with short stories, therefore I cannot answer this one.
Harry Potter or Lemony Snicket?
Who is Lemony Snicket? However, I really like Harry Potter. I became addicted through my friend Nico who could convince me of trying it out and read the first book. I never expected that a mass hype would get me. Nevertheless, I really liked the writing of the author and couldn’t stop reading. Last one I’ve read is the fifth book.
Stop reading when tired or at chapter breaks?
When I am tired it makes no sense to read, so I better stop and continue the next day, although it is hard to stop in the middle of a chapter. I try to read until the next paragraph at least.

Neither. If the first one means crime stories, then I take it. Fairy tales will be a topic when you can call me ‘cola-mom’.
Buy or Borrow?
I like to buy books, either…oh that’s the next question:
New or used?
Either way. Mostly new, but sometimes used (I bought some used books at amazon.de).
Buying choice: book reviews, recommendation or browse?
I often look at the reviews at amazon, but that’s just for the first insight. Recommendations can be tricky, because everyone has a different taste and for instance, I didn’t like the always very highly recommended book “Sophie’s World” at all. I like to browse books, either online or offline.
Tidy ending or cliffhanger?
I prefer the tidy ending.
Morning reading, afternoon reading or nighttime reading?
I would like to change the word night time to evening. I mostly sleep at night. 
Since I am a person who cannot get up very fast in the morning, I seldom read in my half-consciousness; only if my partner is still sleeping next to me and I don’t want to leave the warm bed.
Standalone or series?
Both. I like series but I often need changes, therefore I mix it.
Favorite series?
When I was a child, I loved the “Mystery of…” books from Enid Blyton. Now it is the “Harry Potter series.
Favorite book of which nobody else has heard?
I guess there is no favorite book that really nobody else heard of before.
Favorite books read last year?
“Notes from a big country” from Bill Bryson (I’ve read the German translation) and “Digital Fortress” from Dan Brown. My first Dan Brown book.
Favorite books of all time?
“Die letzten Kinder von Schevenborn” from Gudrun Pausewang was my favorite book as a child. Now it probably is “Down under” from Bill Bryson.
