Connecting new Aussie ADSL2 modem with wireless German DSL modem
March 26, 2009 - A-life & ENGLISH - (3) COMMENTsFinally I have time to install the new DSL (ADSL2+) modem that I’ve ordered on eBay a few weeks ago. It is brand new, cost me only $30 (plus shipping extra $15), and is supposed to be a good DSL modem, as far I could search in diverse forums for user opinions. For geeks, it is the D-Link DSL-502T, Generation II, ADSL2+ modem router.

My plan is to connect it to my German wireless DSL modem. With only my German modem, which I changed from Annex B to Annex A (Australian Standard), the DSL speed seems to be, ehm, very slow. We reach not more than 900 kb/sec as download speed, around 500 kb/sec upload. Our internet provider gives us up to 24000 kb/s download speed and we can’t use it so far, but we pay our $60 per month. Therefore, I listened to Sven from the other side of this country (Sydney), who said, he had the same slow internet connections with his German DSL modem, therefore he bought a simple Australian DSL modem to put it as transmitter in between phone line and German DSL modem.
If you don’t see me for a while it can mean that I’m having trouble with getting the internet running.
Wish me luck!

Yay, how stupid that I really made a typo in the password, and I was so sure it was uppercase! Now that I’ve talked to the iinet customer support (they were fantastic as always!) I heard there was this uppercase/lowercase problem. Embarrassing!
Finally, after fiddling with the new modem, it can connect to the internet. I am writing this comment here with a speed of almost 7000 kb/s.
(remember, before 1000)
Now I need to connect this fast modem with my old but wireless modem, to use the advantage of surfing wireless (and other advantage setting that only my lovely Fritzbox can do).
@Sven: how do you connect the two modems, via ethernet (LAN), right? Port 1? My D-Link modem has so many settings…do I have to tick PPOE pass through?
I will try some things out now…will be back in a bit.
March 27, 2009No luck so far.
I think I am not doing the right thing.
Do I need to set the Fritzbox as DSL modem (Internet>Zugangsdaten>Betriebsart)?
Or do I leave all settings in the Fritzbox as they were when acting as wireless router?
My idea:
1) plugging in the Aussie modem to the main ADSL wall outlet (phone line) (=receiving fast internet with the new modem)
2) connecting aussie modem with German Fritzbox via Ethernet cable, plugged in DSL port in Fritzbox (to route the internet from Aussie modem to wireless Fritzbox).
note: the DSL lamp on my Fritzbox won’t blink at all.
the signal doesn’t come through…
If I knew what settings I have to change…in both modems. There are far too many setting possibilities in the D-Link (aussie) modem…

Hehe…good luck. It’s not too hard.
March 27, 2009Get the new DSL modem to connect first. Then use port 1 of the Fritzbox to connect to the modem (you need to change settings). Depending on your setup you need to set connection details in the Fritzbox or the new modem.
You’ll be alright Mr Fricklerin.
