Winter

has been beauti-

-ful

with lots of sunshine

and a blue sky 97% of the time

and interesting formations

and interesting cat-walks

We enjoyed the winter races for kids

and for adults

and I went to my first open air on ice (frozen lake)

and realized that people even brought out their couches

I got into skiing

and other outdoor fun

I enjoyed the work that came with the snow

and loved watching the squirrels digging for food

I was totally excited and happy when I finally could smell, hear and see the ocean

This was one of the happiest moments this winter (I really missed the ocean)

I wanted to take my clothes off and run in…

but decided to enjoy the calm winter beach scenery instead

I learned that the wildlife at the beach is somewhat different to Australia (‘s snakes and sharks)

It has been a great winter and Maine is definitely worth a visit during this beautiful, sunny and peaceful time of the year

Winter is as good as over. We’ve had crazy 90 degrees Fahrenheit (32○C) last week, which was very unusal for March in Maine. Well, we’ve enjoyed flip flops and sunbaths on the porch until we got another small snow storm a few days later. What’s happening to the weather? Crazy! We are back to wearing socks and warm jackets for a few more days but from now on it’s supposed to get only warmer. Still a very early spring, people say here in Maine, because it can be snowing until May! As much as I liked the winter, I am ready for all the beauty spring has to offer!

Oh well…I just cannot keep up with my blog. I have so many photos and videos that I would like to upload but I cannot do that from home and my laptop is so slow/old to even handle videos.
I decided I am going to wait for the new macbook pro to come out in hopefully April (if the rumors are true). I can’t wait to actually cut and edit all the videos that I have accumulated over the last months, ehm, years. LOL

When I started writing this entry (which was before Valentine’s Day) we had the little bit of snow that looked like it doesn’t stick around too much longer. Everything was on the melt and the green came through. It felt like spring is here (temperature-wise). I honestly didn’t want the winter to be over yet. (I thought I’d never think or even say this!!)
But it felt like winter hasn’t really come yet. I’ve heard so much about the Maine winters. But, where was the cold? I felt colder in Northern Germany, although coastal, but still. Okay, we had a bit of snow over Christmas and here and there, but it was so mild and so sunny almost every single day so far! I mean I love it!

Snow AND sun = awesome! Who would disagree. If the winters are always like this here (unfortunately I was told they aren’t) I want to be nowhere else in winter.

We thought we might as well use our snowmobile before the snow melts. This was so much fun and I really hope we get more snow to do it again – snowmobiling action with mr.natey as crazy driver and missycola as screaming….missy on the back seat:

These things go F-A-S-T! OMG, my heart skipped a beat while I was trying not to slip off the seat. With the uneven frozen ground it is not possible to foresee the bumps and jumps. I felt like I wanted to wear a helmet at the speed of 50 miles/hr (~100km/h)!!! My smile almost froze in the cold wind, but I was happy like a child.

BUT THEN – two weeks or so later, we got another snowstorm. A real one. I mean a snowstorm that actually deserves the name. LOTS OF SNOW in a short time. Yeahhhh – this was the snow I was awaiting the whole winter!

We were excited like little kids. “Let’s build a snowman!” was one of the first words I spoke that early morning, when I woke up in the perfect winter wonderland and the snow on the tree branches looked so heavy as if the branch can hardly hold it any longer.

And before even having the first coffee and before breakfast, we jumped into our snow suits and ran outside into the backyard:

Also, the second snowstorm brought a lot more snow than the last one, so we could go on another and even better snowmobile ride, because there was more thick snow to slide on.

I made a few videos from this ride and wanted to use imovie to cut them together, but it’s a nightmare. My laptop is too slow to handle this in a decent time (and I am too impatient to wait almost 35 minutes to import a small 130MB file locally! I mean, the video is on my computer already; I’m just trying to open it in imovie. But I guess I need more than 512MB Ram. *cough*
Honestly, who wants to donate me a new laptop? How could I endure this ongoing situation for so long? It’s awful. Anyway, I’m working on getting it done (and hope that Apple launches the new macbook sooner as soon!!!) and will upload it with the next post.

With the last days of the season I enjoy the snow and think ‘Winter is a beautiful season that I have really missed in my years in down under’ (but I never had this nice snow in Germany, so that’s why I thought I don’t miss winter ;)):

Morgenstund hat Gold im Mund.
Wie wahr! Heute morgen Wecker gestellt und runter zum Strand um eine Runde Beachvolleyball zu spielen. War das schoen! Erst zwei gegen zwei gespielt (weiblich: maennlich, 3:1). Dann kamen noch drei Maenner hinzu und es hat dann richtig Spass gemacht. Wir waren auch gar nicht so schlecht. Wir haben zwei Stunden bis 11Uhr gespielt. Dann wurde es schon richtig heiss. Dann Fruehstueck im Cafe neben dem Spielfeld. (Muss beim naechsten Mal Fotos machen.)

Ostwind. Bring Fliegen mit sich. Macht die Wellen platt und das Meer schoen ruhig; perfekt zum Schwimmen. Dumm nur, dass ich die Erkaeltung noch ein bisl in mir habe und lieber nicht baden gehen sollte. Das Meer ist so selten so schoen ruhig. Ich habe mich geaergert, dass ich nicht reinspringen konnte, bzw. dass mein Verstand diesmal gewonnen hat.

Wenn “das Ding” auf einen drauffaellt, ist man (bestimmt) tot oder mindestens angebrochen, so steif ist das. Dieser Riesenstempel ist nur im Fruehling da, ansonsten ist da nix, was oben aus dem Grass Tree rauskommt. Der scheint also zu verbluehen und abzubrechen. Aua.

She’s resting and resting…and resting. Also drinking much green tea with honey. Eating fresh fruit. Went for a short walk today (the mister said I needed some Vitamin D ). Very windy today, but felt nice.

Came back and had a craving for some baby food and ate a jar of organic pasta bolognese suggested for “month year one to month year five”. This reminds me of being back home (in that German land), where I often ate the “HIPP” baby pasta bolognese as a snack. Warm or cold. Very delicious, don’t you think? Same with Semolina – what’s the name for Griessbrei? Semolina mash? Love it, too! Or even better: Semolina soup!

I tried to get up from bed bed to move my tired body a bit and here’s the result:

Date Scones!!
My version: 3 cups self-raising flour, 150ml lactose free cream and 150ml soy milk, 2 tablespoons raw caster sugar, 1 egg and 1 cup chopped dates. About 12 to 15 minutes at 220ºC (or 200ºC fan-forced).

I’m much better today and decided I’ll go back to work tomorrow. Only one day and then weekend anyway (in case I get worse).

Now the man came home and I will surprise him with my scones.

Lately the weeks go by and it feels like nothing exciting happened or it happened way too much in too little time.

Spring has started to spread its wings and when I come home at 7pm it is not completely dark any more. Yippie for the beautiful season with wild flowers all over Perth, yippie for our tree starting to grow back its thick green leaves, yippie for warmer nights. Not so happy for the greasy sunblock lotion that we need to apply to our skin now again more often.

I am still working too many hours in the week, don’t feel relaxed enough after one day a week off, but have the inner feeling I have to do this a little while longer. Nathan is totally overworked as well; at least we understand each others grumpiness.
Spring time means refreshing and renewing energy levels. Although it is green in Perth all year around, many flowers are only to be seen in full bloom during Spring time, because they mostly dry out in the hot summer.
Perth smells beautiful at the moment. We are going for our usual walks in the parks and are almost jumping high of excitement when we see the most amazing flowers around us. Some of them look very unique as we haven’t seen them anywhere else before.

Renewing energy levels also means throwing out old things that are no longer needed. Such as our beautiful old wardrobe, which has a date stamp from 1941 on its back and a personal story from the owner who said it was her sisters wardrobe…back then.
I took some photos to show how we usually move our furniture or otherwise no one would believe it. This wardrobe here was damn heavy and it took a while to move it from the bedroom through two doors and then out of the main door onto Nathan’s little “Suzy” car. Who needs a rental truck or people who move furniture for you if we can do it ourselves. It can be fun, too (especially if I, in the middle of photo number two, say “hold on hon, I have to take a quick photo…leaving the man with the heavy thing alone, hearing complaints, smiling back and taking a quick photo…haha). Well, it all needs to be preserved for the future, doesn’t it?

I am not only de-cluttering our home in Perth, but also (still) selling of my belongings in home number one. Recently I thought I would give it a try to sell my two old crt monitors. If no one wants them I could drop the price (5€ and 10€) to $0 and if still no one wants them, they can go to the recycling/rubbish pit.
BUT- one monitor is in new hands already. For 5€ my dad even delivered it to the guy who only has a scooter, but no car to transport it himself. Schwesterherz, this was your monitor by the way. I told Dad he could spend the money on something nice, but NO cigarillos. His answer: “Wenn ich mir für die 5 € keine Cigarillos kaufen darf, werde ich das Geld in Aktien oder Investmentfonds anlegen, mal sehen, was mehr Gewinn bringt.” Very funny…if he can’t buy cigarillos he wants to invest the money (jokingly).

I am glad that the monitor didn’t end up in the dump. My dad told me there are a lot of old CRT monitors at the local recycling place…no one wants them. Well…I made one guy happy and didn’t need to add it to the already high trash pile.

When people ask me if I miss my home (Germany) I usually say ‘no’.
On my way home from work I stopped at an IGA supermarket and only wanted to look if they have “Apfelmus” (apple sauce) how I know it from ‘home’. See with what I came home:

The cookies and the liquorice are a treat for the mister. Same with his beloved sweet chilli sauce…the apple sauce is for my bakings.

Noooo, I don’t miss home.

Oh no!! A while back a friend over in Sydney (hello Mau!) discovered these cool Moov-boots made of Australian sheepskin inside and waterproof latex rubber outside. Perfect for wet and cold winter weather. I was thinking about getting a pair of Ugg boots on sale, but they are not waterproof, which is the downside. Now I just saw the Moov boots in last years style (which I liked) 50% off! I thought I would go with the black gloss, but maybe I should risk some colour? Pinkypink? What do you think? (That was a rhyme, oh fine!)

Black is always beautiful and goes with anything

Just for the comparison: the new black gloss seems to be a tad different (more gloss? thicker sole? but unfortunately also twice the price, which is $280)

or bubblegum pink against the “always boring black” look?

If I pay with Euros it is even more a bargain *grin*…hmmm Hannah, would I be able to ship them to you and leave them there until next summer? They will be so much better than the Ugg boots. especially in wet weathers….and they will also look better…imagine them with a dress or skirt!
