Nachtrag: Na, will denn keiner mitraten?

Bitte mitraten!!

Home is where the (good) fish is

Today was Good Friday and my dad got some fresh herring from one of his fisher buddies. It is herring season and if we had more time we would go fishing, too. I missed fresh fish and I missed preparing and cooking fresh fish together with my dad. We always fry fish that we caught in our garage or in the garden, to avoid the fish smell in the kitchen and in the house. Today we carried everything in the garden, to our gazebo (or arbor? hon…our Laube): flour, breadcrumbs, salt, pepper, aluminum foil, butter, oil, a frying pan, a mobile hot plate, about 20 herrings, two large bowls for the fried fish and two spatula. It took about an hour to fry the fish. We ate some for lunch and it was awesome! Yummy!

My dad likes to eat the roe (Rogen) as well. It does not look very delicious and I am not ready to try it yet, but he says it is the best part of the fish…here a picture of the raw (a little bit bloody) roe:

After lunch I pickled about ten herrings, which will be ready to eat in four to six days. Anticipation!

Fisher woman Cola is back

September 11, 2006 - A-life & ENGLISH & Germany & Visuelles - (0) COMMENTs

Did I say in my last post that the summer is almost over? Summer is back…at least a little bit. I was very warm today, about 24 Celsius. And then there was the call of a fisher friend of my dad who said that the inner harbor of Eckernfoerde (yes, I’m still here) is full of fisher boats…that means: good chance to catch some FISH.
It was past 6 pm when we took our motorboat for a short drive just a little bit outside of the harbour and we came back at 8.30 pm. At that time it was already quite cold, I only wore my fleece pullover, because when we left it was warm out, but quickly after the sun set it became very cold. My fingers were numb. Not too numb to take some pictures, though *g*
The weather was perfect, here some impressions of the scenery:

We didn’t catch very much, but proudly I can say that I caught 4 herring and my dad 3, hehe. Makes 7 middle up to big sized herring. Once I had two big ones at once on my fishing root. Heavy fidgeting! I lost 3 fish during reeling it in, too bad!
Hey Nathan, if you read this, my dad really caught fish with his shitty fishing root, unbelievable. The reel is broken but he says that the fishing root is the same since he bought it. Well, the herring now is in my fridge (gut, cleaned and salted) and we want to eat it tomorrow for lunch; together with 3 cods that he had in his fish traps the day before.
Yeah yeah, like last year, the fishing season is the best in late summer :)
Good for me to get some fresh air as well, because I my best friend is my computer at the moment.

(ehm, I don’t know why there is so much white space in the post here, I use a new plugin to show the pictures from my gallery. This is also the reason why I can’t send newsletters at the moment, because my admin editor preview and all the field below are missing…weird. I need to fix that somehow.)

White (Bloody) Sunday

April 23, 2006 - A-life & ENGLISH & Germany & Visuelles - (0) COMMENTs

Easter finished today with the catholic holiday called “White Sunday”. I didn’t know this before I watched a TV show for children this morning, where it was explained, hehe. White Sunday is the day where people mostly have their the communion.

I hope you enjoyed Easter. Last week just went by very fast. I wanted to write a post here earlier, but always something came in-between. I worked every day together with my dad, renovating the new house. I had badly muscle ache, and my upper back hurt badly (massage for Cola not before May 30th..too sad). I wasn’t really used to such hard body work. No wonder, because I worked a lot in front of my computer the last months, sitting, not often moving. What a nice change of use of my body =) At least I do some kind of workout and am building muscles…ha, strong powerful Cola :)

Today is ‘White Sunday’. Instead of white it was very bloody for me. Why? My dad’s friend brought him some of his fresh cought herrings and cods today. Very nice! We all waited for the herring season to come and now our bay seems to be full of herrings, great! Here a pic of the fish before:

herring and cod

and after we cleaned and gut the fish:
herring and cod.
Yes, we gut the fish, which means that it was my first time to get in bloody and slimy contact with Mr. Herring and Mr. Cod (oh, there were a lot of females as well). I spare you with detailed (bloody) photos here, but of course did I picture everything =)
I thought that it was time that I need to learn and do this, because I like eating fish and if you eat animals you should also be able to prepare them…err yeah, or whatever, I did it and my friends know that I don’t even like to touch raw meet or slimy fish.
It wasn’t as bad as I expected it. I cut off the head, cut into the a**h*** (yes, that were the directions given by my dad) and cut the body til the head, gut the entrails, remove the fish scales, and wash out the whole fish. A little bit sadistic Cola is. Lol. Just kidding.
In the end, we fried the herring. It looked like this (called ‘Brathering’ or fried herring):
fried fish
Then we pickled the herring, put it in two big bowls where it needs to stay for about 6 days. The cod came into my freezer.

YEEEHHAA the fish season started !!!
Ok, that was my bloody sunday, how was yours?

Food, Mood & Anja-two

Good morning,

I said that the photos of the fish dinner from last Tuesday would follow – here they are:
codFried bread cod (my dad said it’s name is coated cod? Don’t know…you know what I mean ;-))

Together with the fish we ate fried potatoes (from our garden). A little bit oily but good together with the fish:
fried potatoes

We used a new fry pan this time (titan-coated) and it was superb :D Nothing burnt (like last time the skin of the fish).

My skin really says thank-you-thank-you-thank-you for all the good fish and lots of Omega-III. Normally I must take omega-III pills against my dry skin…now my skin says *yeppee*!

The dinner was yesterday.
After it rained the whole night, last night, together with hail and storm it was beautiful and sunny today.
So I came back from grocery shopping and saw that super nice color of the sky and the leaves of my oak tree. I ran inside to grab my camera to show you these pictures:
house
I didn’t edit it in photoshop; it is like it was…beautiful. What do you think?

Here two more where you can see first a look into the garden and second where my study room is (nice view out to the oak) and where the other rooms to front are. Again: no editing! garden
african oak

What else?
My best friend Anja (yes, the same name and the same crazy as I am, also blond but green eyes and one year older than I ;-p) visited me today. She was in Egypt for a week for scuba diving (she has a nice tan) and wanted to show me her holiday photos. I said that I don’t have much time because of the thesis but we didn’t see each other for a loooong time so we had a quick coffee & cake chat in the afternoon. I made another apple cake with apples called “Boskop” from our garden. You can see our freaky coffee-&-cake-session now..haha:
anja2 cappu anja and anja

The apple cake is even better than my last one [see 1st post]
When I have more time I can write the recipe(s) down here; somebody interested? Hmm, we’ll see…
I like food, did I already tell ya…lol. Maybe I should combine it with photography…together it is food photographer :)
My dad said the last time, when I took the pics of the fried fish that I will be starved when I’m done with the photo series…no, I wasn’t. Since I started last year in Perth with documenting my meals (I know I wasn’t the only one *wink-to-Andyman*) I never stopped doing it. Don’t ask me why; I like to do it. I just like it, because (maybe) I like FOOD!
Okay, enough from that…talk to you later. Bed time now. Cya & gn8
